In 1976 the steelpan arrived in Bern. In 2016 PANArt introduced the Hang Bal. From the “round the neck” steelband via the Hang to the “round the shoulder” Hang Bal Spiel.
With footage and photos from PANArt’s archive, Basil Rohner’s video gives us an overview of 40 years of work on the ring of steel.
The PANArt tuner team presents its new sound sculpture: the Hang® Bal. Hang® Bal playing is a dance. The player himself or herself becomes an instrument. Hang® Bal playing allows space for the individual based on a collective groove. Together, a free round dance arises. Whoever has music inside will find a place here.
The Hang® Bal enjoys design protection in many countries.
The Hang® Urgu offers a strong pulse-like bass (78 Hertz/Eb2) and a rich percussive palette. The bass can be lowered by up to one octave by varying the hand's position in the Gu opening. Its ringding is tuned to an Eb chord and serves a double function: a sound source as well as a place to excite the air which produces the bass.

Lyrics, vocals and Pang Sei: Felix Rohner – Urgu: Sabina Schärer – Pang Sui: Basil Rohner – Pang Sai: David Rohner
The deep bass sounds of Gubal, Urgu and Hang Gudu are the musical foundation of the Pang ensemble. However, the little loudspeakers in smartphones, tablets or notebooks and many earphones don't play back these sounds. Therefore we recommend listening to this video only with good speakers or headphones.
